Tips for Connecting.
Be sure that you are not running any other program when connecting to AOL. This will free up as much memory as possible, and will allow AOL to run faster.
Call the number given to you with your phone, not your modem. You should hear fax tones when the phone answers. This will tell you exactly how to enter the number in your setup area.
Be sure to ask your Hotel for a Fax line or an analog line to connect to AOL. Your modem will require this type of line to properly connect.
If there is a problem connecting be sure to have access to your computer (near your phone) when you call for Tech support. Also be sure to have the AOL program running.
This will allow us to troubleshoot your system quickly. Have a pen and paper handy to write down instructions from the Tech. This will save you money on a long distance call.

Listen to your modem when you are connecting to AOL.
Be sure to tell the tech exactly what you are hearing. Whether the phone dials in pulse. Whether you hear a dial tone behind the touch tones dialed by the computer.
Watch the computer screen and note the steps on the screen. For example, step one Initializing Modem, step two Dialing. This will tell the Tech where to begin troubleshooting your problem.
You can create a new "Location" in your software for each area that you will be visiting. This will allow you to quickly change from one location to another and still keep your home location in tact.
If you are not familiar with your computer, don't try to fix something that you don't know anything about. Call a Tech, that is what they are there for, and have been trained to do.
The more information that you can provide to the tech. The faster your problem can be solved and the less costly it will be for you to get a resolution.
Be sure to use the proper Network that is associated with the number that you are using.
Be sure to match your modem speed with the maximum modem speed allowed for connecting to a specific number.
Be aware that AOL does not support Cellular or Satellite phone connections when connecting to AOL. We are not saying that you can not make the connection work,
we are saying if you can make the connection work great. If you can not make the connection work, we will suggest that you use a regular land line to connect.
Some countries have a strange dial tone, most modems will not recognize the dial tone. It will report an error of either no dial tone, busy, or no carrier. This can be quickly solved by a tech to make your modem ignore the dial tone and just dial.
Line noise is definitely a factor when connecting overseas. If you can not connect at your chosen modem speed. Then try connecting at a slower speed.

Please be advised for the first 60 days after you become an AOL member, you will not be able to connect to the AOL service using any AOLGlobalnet or AOLGlobalnet Plus access numbers.
AOL recommends that all members should run ScanDisk and Defrag (disk maintenance) at least once a month on a PC.
AOL and Macintosh recommend that all members should rebuild their desktop (disk maintenance) at least once a month on a Mac.
